What the heck is a Dirty Gnome?

BG here. Have you ever heard of the sandwich called “The Dirty Gnome”? You are probably asking aloud right now “What the heck are you talking about Bad Gnome?” Well, the Dirty Gnome is my FAV-O-RITE sandwich for those of you who don’t know me.

When I was a wee gnome, we were told about the legend of this sandwich which is hundreds of years old, and was supposedly created by a mischievous gnome who was up to no good. But despite its questionable origins, this sandwich has become a beloved favorite of many sandwich connoisseurs both gnome and human alike. It pairs very nicely with a Long Island Gnome by the way.

So, what exactly is in “The Dirty Gnome”?

The Dirty Gnome is a sandwich which is made up of several delicious ingredients that come together to create a taste that is both unique and satisfying. The first ingredient is homemade smoked trout, which gives the sandwich a savory and slightly smoky flavor. The trout is then blended with avocado mayo, spicy brown mustard, Wickles relish, and smoked Tabasco. This delicious spread adds a tangy and slightly spicy kick to the sandwich.

Now for the best part, the delicious filling is wedged between two slices of German rye bread, which is known for its dense texture and slightly sour taste. Topping that off is thinly sliced organic Baby Swiss which creates a gooey and delicious layer of cheese (if you melt it folks). If you aren’t into hot sandwiches make sure the cheese is at room temperature and sweating a bit. Finally, a pinch of salt and pepper is added to bring out the flavors of all the ingredients.

The Dirty Gnome Sandwich Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. homemade smoked trout, flaked
  • 2 slices German rye bread (Delba is best)
  • 2 slices organic Baby Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup avocado mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
  • 2 tbsp Wickles relish
  • 1 tsp smoked Tabasco sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the spread: In a small bowl, manipulate the flaked smoked trout with a fork until smooth. Add mayonnaise, spicy brown mustard, Wickles relish, smoked Tabasco sauce, and salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  2. Assemble the sandwich: Lay out the two slices of German rye bread on a clean surface. Place a generous amount of the smoked trout spread on top of one of the bread slices. Ensure the spread is evenly distributed for maximum flavor in every bite.
  3. Place the Baby Swiss cheese slices on top of the smoked trout spread, allowing the cheese to slightly overlap.
  4. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and fresh cracked pepper over the spread and cheese layers to bring out the flavors of the ingredients.
  5. Top the sandwich with the second slice of rye bread..
  6. Optional: To make the cheese gooey, you can lightly toast the assembled sandwich in a pan on medium-low heat or in a panini press for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the bread is slightly crispy.
  7. Slice the sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious and unique Dirty Gnome sandwich!

Conclusion

While the origin of “The Dirty Gnome” may be shrouded in mystery, one thing is certain: this sandwich is a must-try for any sandwich lover and I highly recommend it if you got some smoked trout lying around the fridge. Its unique combination of flavors and textures make it a standout among other sandwiches, and its long history only adds to its appeal. So, the next time you’re looking for a sandwich that’s both delicious and intriguing, give “The Dirty Gnome” a try.
